The ExperiencePersonal Experience: Reflection time went as planned, some new ideas started to develop. End of the meeting Where do we go from here? What do we do with the information we have collected.Good question: How can you link your experience to your classroom practice. How can I use my activity to the class. People are at different stagesProvided time to get back into group and talk. Life was busy at the beginning of the year. After SOAM teachers did not have time to go back and reflect. The fact that some teachers spoke about the reflection after the event.Conversations are starting; Not only on campus but in social situations. A genuine interest.the timing was great to be with the group, underwhelmed with the reflection question. Would have liked for it to dig in and provide an opportunity to think deeply.
CommunicationPuxi HS don't know what it is?Some teachers really don't know what Project NOW is?If teachers did not understand Project NOW they possibly needed guidance to make the experience worthwhile.SOAM and Project NOW are sometimes seen as the same thingPossibly don't call it SOAMSome team members did not know the instructions. Maybe it could have been presented at a staff meeting prior.Communication by campus- Emails to go out from someone on campus that teachers identify with (possibly even in division) someone from the campus so that they can relate to the email.Scaffolding the learning along the way. Provide support in a variety of ways. What is the goal of Project NOW. What do we want to accomplish. Something concreteProblemsMake a compelling argument about why we want to change our teaching practice! As teachers we need to learn to teach in a way we were not taught
PossibilitiesThe seed in every garden. Find a shared experience e.g. watch something powerful and clear and then have a discussion guided by a teacher who is informed and motivated about building their understandingFind a coalition of the willing TED talks/Book talksDivision wide Project NOW committees- ES committee has developed a successful process for supporting teachers (conversations about teaching, learning spaces) the ground level committee is communicating about Project NOWBuild the coalition of the willing from the divisional level-meetings are held during Department meeting timeResearch based, email TED talks
Puxi ES- See abovePuxi MS- possibly agreeable sPX HS- enough people have come up saying they are interested. If we are serious we need to give it the time and space it requiresPD MS- Possibly agreeablePD HS- Possibly as a voluntary committee- If principals were on board it would be more visibly and time supportedPD ES limited number of teachers and teachers may be over whelmed
Possibly a couple of Wednesdays devoted to Project NOW for the divisional development-Possibly a Project NOW coordinator (organizer/ PD/ coach)Verticle communication in ES has exploded in ES Puxi - Collaboration has increased organically- what is the basis of our learningMS have an interested group of teachers, but finding the time to meet is more difficult.
Project NOW Teaching and Learning 2013-2014Information, Awareness, ExplorationWe have some teachers who are taking off on their own with Project NOWWe understand that some teachers may not have an understand Project NOW. That is OK.

Cannon DesignNot an educational institution, but they do have Design Thinking strategies that support Design ThinkingHack a classroomDesign Thinking Workshop for facultyStudent Design Camp- Explore Shanghai
Possibility of having meeting at Cannon Design in October
We need to see ourselves as designers. We need to re design the way we teach. Maybe they could teach us the method of Design.Possibility a three day type workshop with Cannon Design for teachersThis would support teachers in developing a better understanding of what 'design thinking' isMaybe Design Thinking classroom
ES hoping to HACK a classroom possibly have a Cannon Design representative meet with the ES Project NOW teamMeet with them prior to making decisions about how they will support Project NOWWe need to be specific about what we are looking for in our relationship.Possibility of offering the Design Thinking workshop prior to going out for the Year 9 Out In Shanghai day in PudongOne of the bridges in Design Thinking is communicating and opening up our understanding of Design Thinking
Contact Cannon Design regarding the following:One suggestion Oct 28th Meeting. We invite Cannon Design to our meeting. We are interested in a brief 10 minute session on each of the following1. Hack the space, (2. teacher workshop on Design Thinking, ( how could this work)3. student Design Camp- Explore Shanghai (What might this look like)4. Dschool web session/webinar (virtual crash course)

21st Learning Symposium FebMaybe mention Project NOW Teaching and Learning at SAS e.g. sponsored by Project NOW Teaching and Learning at SASProject NOW posters advertising and promote what we are doingNeeds to be done on both campuses maybe a flip of keynote speakers and sessions on each campus e.g. Yong Zhao, Craig Tafel possibly transfer from one campus to anotherIs there an entrance charge; reaching out into the communityThe words 'exclusive' and a charge may impact the demandCall on resources (parents) who can get the word out to the community.ACTION: Invite Abby Torris to our October meeting to discuss the communications and marketing aspect of Project NOW Teaching and Learning at SAScould we invite some of theACTION: Brad to share the 21st Century Learning Symposium with the Executive Committee
It would be worthwhile to include the date, and keynote in the Shanghai Family in November.Committee members to identify stories, activities that could be included in the EAGLE Project NOW edition. Possibly the graphic would be identified on the cover of EAGLE. Elements of the graphic could be highlighted to identify how it is being reflected in our school.
Articles for the EAGLE magazine Project NOW could be printed in the magazine or available electronically. It may be a precursor for divisional Project Committee meetingsAgreement: Committee members have agreed to follow up in their division to encourage teachers to write Project NOW articles
Recommended that there is a Design Thinking Workshop for teachers to accessNovember
Action: Ask possible glamour bar drink (2 drink vouchers)Action: Request one hour for motivational video/ TED talk on FEb 6th for Feb 7
Request for funds for 2 drink tickets at the end of the day
    Five Year Plan
Suggested that a connection to Real Life Result of the Curriculum Action team Learning Strategic Objective is connected to the Five Year Plan.Suggested that we identify some expert Dschool trainers that can become trainers for the staffPossibility of including teachers and students in a Design CampPossibly a boot camp design school as an alternative to Date with DadSummer suggested reading list: parent, teacher and student books to support understanding
    Data collection Template
-What would be shared in the community vs. what data we keep internally. Taylor from communications said that she has been reading a book about this, and we should be cautious about using social networking. Tim sent a powerschool page that could be used also. Teachers would have access to a page that wouldn’t be “pretty”, but it could house information. One concern is that it needs to look good. Maybe the EC Coach from Puxi could support us with a program that could be user friendly and interesting for teachers to populate with information (Padlet).
    · Wiki /Moodle for housing Project NOW information and data
-Tonya shared the updated Wiki. New links were added in, along with the phases of the design process. Additional pages were added (Ideas and Locations). This Wiki is designed for faculty to use. Also, there’s a new page called “project now @ work”, which is divided up by divisions. Could be linked to the articles that will be in the Eagle PN edition, or linked to the PN data warehouse.
    · Template for gathering information from Project NOW type schools
-Go to the "practicing schools" link on the Wiki. The group was looking for categories of questions, and what other schools have done. We need to be able to group the data that we collect (quantifiable). The categories are Learning Environment, 21st Century Schools, The Learner, Who We Should Meet… Also, a walkthrough checklist/framework was created.
    · Awareness, Information, and Exploration
-Information was updated on the Project Now Wiki link: 2013-2014 Awareness, Information, and Exploration

San Francisco & Napa School Visits
Ann and myself visited the D.School at Stanford, 3 Design Thinking Schools (East Palo Alto and Bayside STEM Academy in SF and New Tech High in Napa). There was definitely a take-away and theme from each of these visits which can be seen in the following keynote, which we presented to the team upon our return.
{DesignThinkingSchools_PreviewPresentation.key} *Videos were removed to make the file small enough to upload.
Although each visit was extremely valuable, we found that New Tech High, which is under the New Tech Network, was the best model for SAS. Here are some foundational materials (rubrics, group contracts, schedules) that they shared with us.

California School Visits and Innovation Conference
It was an inspiring and educational experience for Kathleen, Janet, Tonya and myself. We visited an elementary school, middle school, a K-9 school (Nueva School) and attended the Innovation Conference at Nueva.
Presenters included Tony Wagner, Creating Innovators, Larry Rosenstock, founder and leader of High Tech High, and David Kelly, founder of the Stanford d.school, which we visited as well. Full report and learnings at our meeting.

    Melbourne Schools
I toured two K-12 school campuses, and conducted interviews with 3 principals, and one university lecturer/financial trainer
    Follow-up to this visit
2014 - setting up an informal focus group of high school teachers and one principal (across different schools), to take part in an action research project investigating obstacles to developing a constructivist curriculum in grades 9 – 12.
The presentation below outlines the results of the interviews in terms of emerging themes

    The research element
Any design for transformational change should consider the needs of the clientele, current practices, and future challenges. Change theory (Hargreaves 2007) reinforces the importance of past knowledge in informed decision-making as opposed to grabbing the latest new trend. Models such as Van Oord’s (2013) 5-step process (beginning with the evaluation of current practice) serve as an example of protocols for development of a vision. This 5-step plan is significant in that it acknowledges that situational knowledge, collaboration, and the results of school-based action research are all necessary to designing an effective vision. It also reinforces the need for a structured approach. The ProjectNow committee has, and continues to, strive to identify and to investigate the principles of 21st century approaches such as Design Thinking.
The elements below are resources that we have used, and resources we would like to share.
